Superintendent Seeks Waiver Due to Inclement Weather Days

(PDF) April 16, 2017 – Superintendent Patricia Saelens has requested the state waive two instructional days for students to help make up for the extra snow days the school system used this year.

Public schools in Maryland are required to have 180 instructional days and 1,080 hours in the school year. With the missed days, Caroline County Public Schools will meet the 1,080 hours requirement but not the 180 day requirement. The state also requires that school not start until after Labor Day and end by June 15.

If the waiver is granted, the last day of school will be as originally scheduled:

  • June 14 – Last day for Pre-K
  • June 15 – ½ day – Last day for students

The Maryland State Board of Education is expected to make decisions on school system waiver requests at their April 24, 2018 meeting.
