Colonel Richardson High School Student Moves to State in Poetry Out Loud Competition

(PDF) March 1, 2018 - Colonel Richardson High School senior Jeanette Banko recently participated in the Poetry Out Loud regional competition in Chestertown, Maryland. Jeanette was one of three students chosen to continue to the state competition.

Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 schools in every state, Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

In the competition, Jeanette recited three poems:  "The Idler" by Alice Moore Dunbar Nelson, "Quite Frankly" by Mark Halliday, and "August 12 in the Nebraska Sand Hills Watching the Perseids Meteor Shower" by Twyla Hansen.

According to Jeanette, "I became involved in Poetry Out Loud because I love poetry. By participating, I get the chance to find new poems I love and share them."

The state competition will be held at the Baltimore Museum of Art on March 10.
