Board News from April 2017 Board of Education Meeting

  Members of Denton Elementary School's Fuel Up to Play 60 team opened the April Board meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.








Leilani Johnson, Denton Elementary School, was recognized for being selected as Caroline County Public School representative to the Maryland Day Festivities on March 25 in historic St. Mary's City. Johnson is pictured with Superintendent Dr. Patricia Saelens and Board member Louise Cheek.







  First time Carson Scholars Mia Amador (LMS) and Pearl Sutton (NCHS) were recognized. Accepting Sutton's award was her father, Lee Sutton. The Carson Scholars Fund recognizes a select group of high achieving students in grades 4-11 who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities. Students receive a $1,000 college scholarship award and the honor of being named a Carson Scholar.  Amador and Sutton are pictured with Superintendent Dr. Patricia Saelens and Board member Louise Cheek.




Seventh time Carson Scholar Jeanette Banko (CRHS) was recognized along with the following three other students not pictured: Rebecca Gibbons, 6th time scholar from NCHS; Paul Sutton, 4th time scholar from NCHS and Corinne Webb, 3rd time scholar from LMS. Paul Sutton's award was given to his father, Lee Sutton. Banko and Sutton are pictured with Superintendent Dr. Patricia Saelens and Board member Louise Cheek.






Board President James A. Newcomb Jr. announced Dr. Patricia Saelens as Caroline County Public Schools' new Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Saelens has been serving as interim superintendent since December. Her official four-year contract as superintendent will begin on July 1, 2017.

The Board of Education approved the following items:

  • Last Day of School - The 2016-2017 school year calendar has been amended to reflect 180 student days and 190 teacher work days. Four days were included in the current school year calendar for inclement weather. School was closed for two days for snow (January 9 and January 10, 2017), therefore the school year calendar will be adjusted to end two days earlier. The last day of school for students will be June 6, 2017 (half day) and the last work day for teachers will be June 7, 2017.

  • Overnight Field Trip Request - NCHS Band Trip to Disney World April 26-29, 2017. Students participating in this trip will be in competition against marching bands from all over the United States.


The Board of Education held a discussion on the Policy on Student Assignment.
